- Lipan · Apache (ethnonym) · the Lipan Apache people, who historically lived in the region where the fossil was found
Acantholipan combines the Greek "akantha" (thorn or spine) with "Lipan", the Lipan Apache people who once lived in northern Mexico and the nearby region. The name refers to this armoured dinosaur's spiny body armour and honours the region's Indigenous history.
