Accepted genus
Tornier's (animal)
- Tornier · German surname · Gustav Tornier, German zoologist
- -ia · Latin · Latinised suffix for a name
Tornieria honours Gustav Tornier, a German herpetologist who worked at the Berlin Natural History Museum. Sternfeld coined the name in 1911 as a replacement because the original name, Gigantosaurus (Fraas, 1908), was already used for another animal. The name has no anatomical meaning. It simply commemorates Tornier.
