Oceanotitan
oh-SEE-ah-noh-TIE-tan /oʊˌsiːɑnoʊˈtaɪtən/
Accepted genus
ocean titan
- oceano · Latin · ocean (from Greek Okeanos)
- titan · Greek · titan, a giant of Greek mythology
The name combines the Latin/Greek-derived word for "ocean" with the Greek "Titan", a giant of Greek myth. It refers to the Atlantic Ocean, beside which the fossils were found on the Portuguese coast, and to the animal's large size as a sauropod. The only named species, O. dantasi, honours the Portuguese palaeontologist Pedro Dantas.
