- Lameta · place name · the Lameta Formation (Lameta Ghat) near Jabalpur, India, where the fossils were found
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name means "Lameta lizard". It refers to the Lameta Formation in central India, where the original bones were found, combined with the Greek word for lizard. Matley named it in 1923 from a mix of bones and armor-like plates, and he thought it was an armored dinosaur.

The type material (species L. indicus) is thought to be a chimera. The bones probably come from several animals, such as theropods and sauropods. The "armor" plates may belong to a titanosaur or a crocodile-like animal. The genus is generally treated as a nomen dubium, and the original armored-dinosaur interpretation is not accepted.
