Jenghizkhan
JEN-giz-kahn /ˈdʒɛn.ɡɪz.kɑːn/
Synonym of Tarbosaurus
Genghis Khan
- Jenghiz · Mongolian (Latinised) · Genghis, the personal/royal name of the Mongol ruler
- khan · Mongolian · ruler, lord
The name honours Genghis Khan (spelled "Jenghiz Khan" here), the 13th-century founder of the Mongol Empire. It was chosen because the fossils come from Mongolia, and the name evokes a fearsome Mongolian conqueror, which suits a large predatory tyrannosaurid. The name was proposed for the species usually called Tarbosaurus bataar.

Junior synonym of Tarbosaurus (Maleev, 1955). Jenghizkhan was proposed in the mid-1990s for the species now called Tarbosaurus bataar, but most researchers treat Tarbosaurus as the valid genus. The Nemegt Formation is dated to the late Campanian–Maastrichtian; the Maastrichtian is given here as the commonly cited age. The exact authorship and year should be checked against the original publication.
