Galeamopus
GAY-lee-AM-oh-pus /ˌɡeɪliˈæməpəs/
Accepted genus
helmet face
- galea · Latin/Greek · helmet
- -mopus (from ōps) · Greek · face
Galeamopus combines a root meaning "helmet" with a Greek root meaning "face", giving roughly "helmet face". It was coined for a diplodocid sauropod known from relatively well-preserved skull material, and the name alludes to the shape of that skull. The type species, G. hayi, was originally described as a species of Diplodocus.
