Accepted genus
Appalachia lizard
- Appalachia · Modern Latin (geographic) · the Appalachian landmass, the eastern North American land that existed during the Late Cretaceous
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name means "Appalachia lizard". It refers to Appalachia, the eastern landmass of North America that was separated from Laramidia in the west by the Western Interior Seaway during the Late Cretaceous. The name was chosen because this tyrannosauroid is one of the few large theropods known from that eastern landmass. The species name, A. montgomeriensis, refers to Montgomery County, Alabama, where it was found.
