Alaskacephale
ah-LAS-kah-SEF-ah-lee /əˌlæskəˈsɛfəliː/
Accepted genus
Alaska head
- Alaska · English (from Aleut) · Alaska, the place of discovery
- kephale · Greek · head
The name combines "Alaska", the US state where the fossil was found, with the Greek word for "head". It refers to this dome-headed dinosaur's skull, and to the fact that it was one of the few pachycephalosaurs known from the far north. The species name, gangloffi, honours Roland Gangloff, the paleontologist who studied Alaskan dinosaurs.
