Yezosaurus
yeh-zo-SORE-us /ˌjɛzoʊˈsɔːrəs/
Yezo lizard
- Yezo · Japanese (Ainu-derived place name) · old name for Hokkaido, Japan
- sauros · Greek · lizard
The name appears to combine "Yezo", an old name for Hokkaido in northern Japan, with the Greek "sauros", meaning lizard. It would therefore mean "lizard from Yezo", which refers to where the fossils were found.
- Found in
- Hokkaido, Japan
I'm not confident about this entry. I recall Yezosaurus as a Late Cretaceous marine reptile from Hokkaido, probably a plesiosaur and not a dinosaur. I can't confirm its author, year or current taxonomic status, so I've left those fields blank. Please check this against a taxonomic database before relying on it.
