Shanag
SHAH-nag /ˈʃɑːnæɡ/
Accepted genus
Mongolian "shanag" (a traditional Mongolian priest's cap)
- shanag · Mongolian · Mongolian priest's cap
Shanag is a small feathered theropod known from a partial jaw and skull material from Mongolia. The name comes from the Mongolian word "shanag", which I recall as referring to a traditional Mongolian priest's cap, apparently alluding to a feature of the fossil. I am not certain of the exact feature the name alludes to. The only named species is Shanag ashile.

A small theropod usually classified as a basal dromaeosaurid (some analyses place it differently among paravians). The etymology detail, particularly what the cap refers to, is from memory and should be checked against the original 2011 description.
