Huehuecanauhtlus
WAY-way-kah-NOWT-lus /ˌweɪweɪkəˈnaʊtləs/
Accepted genus
ancient duck
- huehue · Nahuatl · old, ancient
- canauhtli · Nahuatl · duck
The name combines the Nahuatl words "huehue" (old or ancient) and "canauhtli" (duck), giving "ancient duck". It is a reference to its being an early duck-billed (hadrosauroid) dinosaur, and the Nahuatl roots honour the Mexican origin of the fossils. The type species is Huehuecanauhtlus tiquichensis, named after the Tiquicheo area.
