Hexinlusaurus honours the Chinese palaeontologist He Xinlu, who first described the fossils. He Xinlu and Cai Kaiji had earlier named the species as Yandusaurus multidens. In 2005, Barrett, Butler and Knoll gave it its own genus and named it for He. The name combines his name with the Greek word for "lizard".

A small, early-branching plant-eating ornithischian. The type species is Hexinlusaurus multidens, originally described as Yandusaurus multidens. I have left out the exact geologic stages because I am not certain of them.
