Fulengia is named after the Fuleng locality in Yunnan Province, China, where the fossil material was discovered. The suffix '-ia' is a standard Latinised ending commonly applied to genus names derived from place names. The name thus commemorates the geographic origin of the specimen. Fulengia is generally considered a nomen dubium. It was originally described as a prosauropod dinosaur, but the material is fragmentary and may represent a juvenile specimen of another taxon, possibly Lufengosaurus. Some analyses have suggested the material could even belong to a non-dinosaurian archosaur. It is not widely accepted as a valid genus.
