Eopengornis
EE-oh-PENG-or-niss /ˌiːoʊˈpɛŋɔːrnɪs/
Accepted genus
dawn Peng bird
- eo · Greek · dawn, early
- Peng · Chinese · giant mythical bird of Chinese legend (also the root of the related genus Pengornis)
- ornis · Greek · bird
The name combines the Greek "eo" (dawn or early) with Pengornis, a related bird genus. Pengornis in turn comes from "Peng", a giant bird in Chinese mythology, plus the Greek "ornis" (bird). The name therefore marks Eopengornis as an early member of the pengornithid group of birds.
